Feeling of happiness

The National Happiness Survey conducted by NN-UGent shows that the happiest people amongst the working population are the self-employed. This survey also shows that financial satisfaction is the most important factor for achieving happiness. The top five factors that have the greatest influence on our happiness are further supplemented by peace of mind, health, whether we lead a meaningful life, and the quality of our sleep.

Preparing for a long life

NN Group conducted an international survey in 11 countries to understand how people view and prepare for a long, healthy and happy life. In Belgium, this survey shows that 41% of the self-employed feel well prepared for a long life. This percentage is comparable to that of wage-earners (42%).

Growing old successfully

Among Belgians aged 45 and over, maintaining cognitive health (72%), physical fitness and strength (71%), and financial security throughout life (71%) are considered essential conditions for ageing successfully. Many also attach importance to being able to remain in their own home for as long as possible (70%), preserving autonomy (62%), and staying free from chronic diseases (61%). However, priorities differ across socio-professional groups. Among the self-employed, maintaining autonomy is the top priority (78%), while employees place greater emphasis on cognitive health (77%). Non-active individuals consider physical fitness and strength most important (73%), whereas among retirees, the ability to continue living in their own home is paramount (78%).
